Campaigning ended today on a peaceful note in seven districts that will go to polls on November 5 in the second and final phase of the keenly fought local body elections in Kerala, which comes ahead of the assembly polls due next year.

Over one crore voters are expected to exercise their franchise in seven districts in the first phase of the crucial civic polls in Kerala today, which are considered as the semi-finals before the next year's Assembly elections.

A beaming Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy of the Congress said his party's victory in the Aruvikkara by-election today clearly indicates that the United Democratic Front or UDF that it leads will return to power in next year's assembly elections.

The Congress-led coalition government has won an important by-election in Kerala at a time when it is confronting an array of corruption allegations. The Congress candidate, KS Sabarinathan, has been elected to the state legislature from Aruvikkara by a margin of more than 10,000 votes.

Despite heavy rains, an estimated 74.4 per cent turnout was today recorded for the bypoll for Aruvikkara assembly where Kerala's ruling Congress-led UDF and opposition CPI(M)-headed LDF are locked in a stiff contest.

Voting began at 7 am for the assembly bypoll to Aruvikkara in Kerala which is witnessing a three-cornered contest with voters queuing up at polling booths despite rains.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today said the outcome of June 27 Aruvikkara Assembly bypoll would be a referendum on the four-year rule of his government and also on the opposition LDF's performance.

It may be just 20 km away from the Secretariat, but is considered among the most backward constituencies of Kerala's capital. The Arruvikkara Constituency is headed for a highly charged bypoll on June 26, billed as the first three-cornered bye-election in Kerala.
