The Trinamool Congress in Tripura suffered a setback on Friday with a former MLA quitting the party ahead of crucial bypolls in the state.

Tripura Assembly Speaker Ratan Chakraborty on Wednesday disqualified BJP MLA Ashis Das, who joined the Trinamool Congress on October 31 last year, under the anti-defection law (the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution).

Former West Bengal minister Rajib Banerjee and Tripura BJP MLA Ashis Das joined the Trinamool Congress in Tripura today, at a rally being held by Abhishek Banerjee. The court allowed the rally after it was blocked thrice earlier by the state.

Long-time BJP leader and MLA from Tripura's Surma constituency, Ashis Das, on Tuesday had his head tonsured for what he claimed was "penance for the misdeeds" of the BJP-led government in the state.
