Ashtamudi Lake

Kerala's once scenic Ashtamudi Lake, described as the gateway to the state's backwaters and preferred by tourists world over for houseboat rides, has become a dump site for sewage which is slowly choking it to death, according to a KeLSA inspection.

Some tiny islands formed by backwaters of scenic Ashtamudi Lake and Kallada River in Kollam Disrict in southern Kerala, among the major tourist attractions, are sinking due to rising sea level and erosion, according to local authorities.
