Assam Accord 1985

Members of the All-Assam Students' Union today met Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to discuss matters related to the 1985 Accord and the development of the state. The student leaders were happy at the Chief Minister's approach to the matter.

Asom Gana Parishad, a BJP ally, has promised in its poll manifesto the implementation of the 1985 Assam Accord, which states that the government would identify and deport refugees and migrants who had come into the state after March 25, 1971.

Even as fresh violence erupted against the Citizenship Amendment Act, the Ministry of Home Affairs today said that the government has kept itself open to suggestions from the people before draft rules for the law are published.

Migrants from neighbouring countries will not "automatically" gain citizenship even if they belong to the six communities listed in the amended Citizenship Act, central sources said today, adding that all interested candidates will have to submit online applications for the authorities to verify and process.

The government has set up a high-level committee to assess the appropriate level of reservation of seats in the Assam assembly and local bodies for the Assamese people, besides providing other safeguards.
