Bangladesh Lawyer Seeks 1 Crore Taka Over Indian Elephant's Death

A Supreme Court lawyer in Bangladesh has petitioned the High Court in Dhaka to order the government to recover 1 crore taka as compensation from those responsible for the death of 'Bangabahadur', a wild Indian elephant which was swept away 1,700 km by raging floods in the Brahmaputra river.

With the flood situation in Assam deteriorating, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh to the kin of each of those killed and directed the Defence Ministry to provide army assistance in rescue and relief.
