After the unfortunate death of 155 people in possibly Assam's worst hooch tragedy, the National Human Rights Commission issued notices to the state Chief Secretary calling for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks.

Over 150 people, most of them tea garden workers, have died in one of the worst hooch tragedies in Assam. Over 90 are dead in Golaghat and the rest in Jorhat. The number of deaths is likely to go up district administrative officials have told NDTV.

As many as 45 tea plantation workers died on Sunday, pushing the death count in Assam's worst mass alcohol poisoning case in years beyond 143. At least 200 others - 17 of them critical - are still being treated at hospitals across the state, news agency AFP quoted police as saying.

The number of tea plantation workers who died after consuming toxic illicit liquor in Assam has gone up to 120. More than350 people are in hospital. The deaths come less than two weeks after more than 100 people died in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand from drinking illegally produced alcohol, known locally as hooch or country liquor.

At least 32 tea plantation workers, including nine women, died in Assam from drinking toxic illicit liquor, while at least 50 have been admitted to a hospital. Four of them are critically-ill, a doctor said.

As many as 19 residents of a village in Assam's Karimganj district have been arrested for stripping a woman and inserting chilli powder into her private parts as "punishment" for allegedly selling illicit liquor in the area.

With the Assam assembly polls round the corner, the Election Commission has so far seized nearly Rs.3 crore in unaccounted money and over four lakh litres of illicit liquor from across the state, officials said today.
