A second wave of flash floods hit the state yesterday, taking the death toll across Assam to nearly 80. At least two lakh people are in relief camps, with more than 30 lakh affected, and 18 districts are inundated

All the 15 newborn babies who died at a government hospital in Assam over the past few days were "critically ill and had no chance of survival", a hospital spokesperson said on Saturday.

After at least 16 infants died in Assam's Jorhat Medical College and Hospital within nine days, the state government has ordered a probe into the matter. As many as 16 newborns died in the hospital between November 1 and November 9, with authorities yet to ascertain what caused the deaths.

In a reminder of the tragedy in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur, eight infants have died in a span of 24 hours at the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Assam's Barpeta district. Five children died on Wednesday night and three on Thursday, as per hospital records.

Five members of a family, including a nine-day-old infant, were trampled to death by a wild elephant in Assam's Biswanath Chariali district bordering Arunachal Pradesh, a forest official said.
