Assam Hospital Claims Infants Who Died In 9 Days Were "Critically Ill"

All the 15 newborn babies who died at a government hospital in Assam over the past few days were "critically ill and had no chance of survival", a hospital spokesperson said on Saturday.

After at least 16 infants died in Assam's Jorhat Medical College and Hospital within nine days, the state government has ordered a probe into the matter. As many as 16 newborns died in the hospital between November 1 and November 9, with authorities yet to ascertain what caused the deaths.

In a reminder of the tragedy in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur, eight infants have died in a span of 24 hours at the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Assam's Barpeta district. Five children died on Wednesday night and three on Thursday, as per hospital records.
