  Curfew has been re-imposed in Golaghat, the epicentre of the violence that has hit the border villages of Assam and Nagaland over the last few days. 15 adivasis or tribals from Assam have died in ethnic clashes with Nagas in the last one week.

  The violence in Golaghat district of Assam bordering Nagaland began as a land dispute between two men, says a central government note, also alleging that the dispute was fanned by local politicians, social activists and insurgent group, the NSCN (Khole Kitovi).

  A two-km stretch of Assam-Nagaland border in Golaghat turned into a battlefield today, with Assamese protesters blockading the highway and targeting the police. When batons and tear gas failed to work, the police opened fire. At the end of it, one person was dead -- run over by a truck during the lathicharge -- and 21 people had to be hospitalised.

  Ethnic clashes between the Karbis and the Rengma Nagas on the Assam-Nagaland border have led to the death of 20 people since the last week of December and also displaced many people from their villages.

  There is no end to tension on the Assam-Nagaland border with many areas, especially those on the Assam side, are either under curfew or under prohibitory orders following clashes between the Karbi and the Rengma Naga communities since the last week of December that has seen more than 16 deaths so far.
