Prolific filmmaker Balu Mahendra was a craftsman who narrated emotional dramas with minimum characters and effective visuals for over three decades, won five National Awards and influenced a whole generation of filmmakers with his work.

The film fraternity mourned the death of legendary filmmaker Balu Mahendra, terming the passing away of "creator's creator" as a "massive loss" for the industry.

Balu Mahendra, director of acclaimed Tamil film Moondram Pirai and its Hindi version Sadma, died in a Chennai hospital today. He was 74.
