Ban Ki-moon On Kashmir

Rejecting Pakistan's repeated demand to the United Nations over Kashmir, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that Pakistan and India should address their outstanding issues, including Kashmir, through "dialogue".

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today made no reference to Kashmir and the situation in the Valley in his last address despite Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's repeated calls to the world body to help resolve the Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan.

Condemning the terrorist attack on an army camp in North Kashmir's Uri town that killed 17 soldiers, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hoped the perpetrators of the crime will be brought to justice andre-establishing stability and preventing any further loss of life will be the priority of "all involved".

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon decried the deaths in the current unrest in Jammu and Kashmir and also offered UN office to facilitate dialogue between India and Pakistan to "achieve a negotiated settlement" on all outstanding issues, including Kashmir.

The UN has strongly rejected assertion that Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has a "vow of silence" on the issue of Kashmir.

Expressing regret over the loss of lives and injuries in the clashes in Kashmir, UN chief Ban Ki-moon has called on all parties to exercise "maximum restraint" to avoid further violence and hoped that all concerns would be addressed through peaceful means.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has declined to comment on a report by a rights group that sought the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir and investigation into the alleged human rights violations by security personnel.

Stepping up its efforts to internationalise the Kashmir issue, Pakistan has written to United Nations Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon on the recent border tension with India and has sought the UN's intervention.
