Bangladesh Schools Shut

Bangladesh ordered every high school, Islamic seminary and vocational institute in the country to close indefinitely on Tuesday, an official told AFP on Tuesday, after violent student protests left at least six people dead.

Bangladesh has shut thousands of schools as it struggles through its lengthiest heatwave in half a century, with widespread power cuts only compounding locals' misery.

At least 13 people have died in flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in the Northeast in the past three days. Assam's capital Guwahati, one of the cities in the Northeast selected in the centre's Smart City project, saw severe water-logging. Neighbouring states Manipur and Mizoram also saw strong floods in several districts.

Schools and businesses were shut on Monday across Bangladesh on the second day of a general strike called by Islamist protesters, as three more demonstrators died in the deadliest violence since independence.
