Bargari Sacrilege

Seven years after a sacrilege incident triggered violent protests in Punjab, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has indicated that the crime was committed following a conspiracy by Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim for revenge.

Followers of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect have demanded a judicial probe after a follower, accused in the 2015 Bargari sacrilege case, was killed in inside a prison in Punjab's Nabha on Saturday.

Security was stepped up and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh promised strong action after a man, accused in a 2015 sacrilege case, was killed inside a prison on Saturday evening, risking an outbreak of communal violence.

A protest march was taken out from Kotkapura to Bargari demanding action against those involved in sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib in 2015 and also against police personnel who allegedly opened fire at agitators protesting against these incidents.

One of the alleged accused out of two brothers arrested in connection with the sacrilege incident of Sikh holy book at Bargari in Faridkot, was today hospitalised in view of spinal injury, said the Punjab police.
