The Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) won two seats each in their 4:1 victory over the BJP in the by-elections to three Lok Sabha and two assembly constituencies in Karnataka. State chief minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy attributed the alliance's victory to "arithmetic".

The Supreme Court on Tuesday suspended the recounting of votes that was directed by the Karnataka High court when it set aside the election of J Shantha, the Bharatiya Janata Party's Lok Sabha member from Bellary in Karnataka. Shantha was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Bellary Reserved constituency in 2009.
