The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday demanded to remove the "Singur Andolan" chapter from history books claiming that the chapter has glorified "corrupt" Partha Chatterjee by calling him a freedom fighter.

The peasants' movement in Singur will be part of the history curriculum in schools of the state-run West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) from the current academic session, a senior minister announced here on Monday.

Amidst criticism of reported exclusion of Karl Marx and Frederich Engels from the history syllabus of higher secondary text books in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said her government did not consider Marx or Lenin as "untouchables".

Students in West Bengal government schools will soon have limited exposure to Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. A committee set up by the Trinamool government to restructure the syllabus for higher secondary students reportedly wants a much reduced emphasis on Marx and Engels in history textbooks.
