Bengaluru Protest Banned

Farmers and Kannada organisations, backed by the opposition BJP and JD(S), have called for a bandh in Bengaluru today to protest the release of Cauvery water to neighboring Tamil Nadu.

The protests in the state started late last year when school students were prevented from wearing the headscarf. It has since sparked protests and counter-demonstrations involving saffron scarves that have spread to other states as well.

The row over the use of hijab or headscarves by women in educational institutions had ripples in parliament today. In Bengaluru, the police banned gatherings and protests near educational institutions.

Incidents of stone pelting and use of force by police were reported on Tuesday as the hijab row in Karnataka escalated and protests by students spread to more colleges.
