Vandals scrawled Nazi swastikas and the words "gas them" on Germany's memorial to the half million Roma and Sinti murdered by the Nazis, the foundation behind the monument said today.

Germany's capital Berlin was hit by a spate of car fires in the early hours of Tuesday. According to police reports, four parked cars were set on fire at different locations in the city, and a further two were damaged.

Police say the house in southern Germany where Pope Benedict XVI was born has been vandalized with obscene graffiti.
