Swine flu has claimed 44 lives in Madhya Pradesh with five patients each succumbing to the deadly H1N1 virus in Bhopal and Indore districts since July 1 this year, a senior official said today.

As more and more cases of people affected from swine flu are reported from across the country, inadequate protection against the highly contagious virus and burden on medical facilities have become a huge problem.

Since January, swine flu has claimed the lives of over 400 people across the country; over 5,000 people have tested positive for the disease, according to the Union health ministry.

Swine flu claimed its second victim in Madhya Pradesh this year, with a 67-year-old man succumbing to the viral infection at a hospital in Indore.
