The Bihar government is facing a huge backlash for its decision to tweak prison rules, allowing the release of 27 convicts, including gangster-turned-politician Anand Mohan Singh who faces life in prison for the murder of a Dalit IAS officer.

The Bihar government today notified the release of 27 prisoners, days after amending the Bihar Prison Manual that triggered a massive opposition backlash.

With Bihar's ruling JD(U) alleging violation of the jail manual by allowing RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav send a letter to Raghuvansh Prasad Singh asking him not to quit the party, the Jharkhand prison department on Friday said that the letter had "personal contents" and not political and no rules were bent in the matter.

Lalu Yadav, jailed in Jharkhand on Saturday after being convicted in a corruption case, has been to prison six times before, twice in the state's capital Ranchi. But never before has he had to contend with a jail manual being followed in letter and spirit.
