The National Green Tribunal has said that the Uttar Pradesh health department and the state pollution control board (SPCB)are not properly geared up for management of biomedical waste of COVID-19 patients.

A group of private dentists in Goa wore black arm bands during an interaction with BJP president JP Nadda to register their protest against the recent hike in biomedical waste handling charges by the state government.

Noting that only 1.1 lakh of the 2.7 lakh healthcare facilities identified across the country are authorised under the biomedical waste management rules, the National Green Tribunal on Tuesday said serious efforts should be made to bridge this gap to avoid environmental hazards arising out of handling of COVID-19 disease.
