Birbhum Rape Case

A tribal girl has been gang-raped in West Bengal's Birbhum district by at least five men when she was returning home from a village fair, police said today.

A court in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Wednesday sentenced a man to 20 years' rigorous imprisonment in the 2019 rape case of a seven-year-old girl.

The Supreme Court today lashed out at the West Bengal government for its failure to protect "the fundamental rights'' of a 20-year-old tribal woman who was gangraped by 13 men in Birbhum district in January, and directed it enhance the amount of compensation paid to her by an additional Rs 5 lakh.

Observing that the rising instances of crimes against women had "sullied" the image of West Bengal and "people are laughing at us", former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Friday asked the authorities to wake up.

Two more people were arrested on Saturday in the Katwa train loot and rape case in West Bengal. They were arrested from the Birbhum district. Four people have been arrested in the case so far. A woman was allegedly gang-raped after she tried to put up a resistance during a robbery attempt in a train near Katwa in the Burdwan district of West Bengal...
