Dengue cases in West Bengal have crossed the 2,000-mark this year while the official death count so far is at 14, a Health Department official said here on Thursday.

Eighty-two new cases of dengue have been reported in West Bengal, taking the total number of the afflicted cases since January to 1,342, a senior Health Department official said today.

Four more people today died of encephalitis in West Bengal, taking the death toll to 116 in the state this year, even as the Health department has claimed that the spread of the vector-borne disease has been checked.

A total 60 people have died of encephalitis in North Bengal Medical College and Hospital and the situation in the seven north Bengal districts was 'alarming', West Bengal Health Services director Biswaranjan Satpathy said today.
