The BJP-IPFT alliance in Tripura has retained power, winning 33 out of the 60 seats. While the alliance won a majority, the emergence of TIPRA Motha as the second-largest party with 13 seats is likely to alter the political dynamics in Tripura.

Manik Saha, tipped to be Tripura's chief minister for a second term, on Thursday defeated Congress's veteran leader Ashish Kumar Saha, by a margin of 1,257 votes from Town Bardowali despite detractors within his own party predicting a "tough time".

Appealing to the people to "bless the BJP for five more years", Mr Sarma said the speed of the "development vehicle" will be 120 kmph if the saffron party retains power in the state.

Tripura's ruling CPM has won both assembly seats for which by-elections were held, retaining one and wresting the other from the Congress. It defeated nearest rival the BJP in Barjala and the Trinamool in Khowai.

Tripura's ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Tuesday retained the Amarpur assembly seat by a huge margin. The BJP edged out the main opposition Congress to take the second spot.
