Black Hole Pairs

Two Columbia University researchers have invented a method of observing into the void between a pair of supermassive black holes that may be more convenient than previous ways. With this new development, astronomers may be able to study black holes smaller than Messier 87 in galaxies further away.

Astronomers using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (ESO's VLT) have discovered two supermassive black holes located in the constellation Aquarius, which is about 89 million light-years away from Earth.

Scientists, including one of Indian origin, have identified five pairs of supermassive black holes, each millions of times the mass of the Sun, that could help better understand the phenomenon of gravitational waves - ripples in the fabric of space and time.

"For a long time, we've been looking into space to try and find a pair of these supermassive black holes orbiting as a result of two galaxies merging."
