Bofors Case Reopen

The Supreme Court today dismissed the CBI's appeal against the Delhi High Court verdict discharging all the accused including the Hinduja brothers in the Bofors case. A top court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said it was not convinced with the reason the Central Bureau of Investigation gave over the delay in filing the appeal.

The Supreme Court is likely to hear on Friday the politically sensitive Rs 64 crore Bofors pay-off case in which the CBI earlier this year filed an appeal after a 12-year delay against the Delhi High Court decision quashing charges against all the accused.

The CBI has written to the government for reconsideration of its 2005 decision and allow the agency to file a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court in the Bofors case challenging quashing of an FIR in the alleged scam, officials said.

In a fresh turn of events, the Supreme Court today agreed to hear an appeal filed by BJP leader Ajay Kumar Agarwal challenging a 2005 Delhi High Court order quashing charges against Europe-based industrialists -- the Hinduja brothers -- in the politically-sensitive Bofors pay-off scam case.

Indicating a resurrection of the decades-old Bofors arms scandal involving allegations of kickbacks to then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and other top officials when the Congress was in power, the CBI has told a group of lawmakers it can reopen investigation into the case.
