A magistrate court has declared as null and void the election of a JD(S) councillor to a local body here, after he did not rebut the petitioner's claims of possessing 500 kg ornaments despite having a BPL card.

The Karnataka government on Monday asked people possessing Below Poverty Line (BPL) ration cards, despite being ineligible on account of owning either a two wheeler, TV, fridge or over five acres of land, to surrender them before March 31 or face legal action.

It's been a week since people of Katihar's Labha, a village about 300 kilometers from Patna, has boycotted 45-year-old Mohd Akhtar and his family. Mr Akhtar runs a Fair Price Shop which is responsible for distributing essential grains at subsidised rates under the government's Public Distribution System.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today launched the ambitious 'Anna Bhagya' scheme in Bangalore. The scheme covers nearly 1 crore families which have the below poverty line or BPL ration card, where in each family can get upto 30 kilos of rice at Re 1 per kg. The scheme will cost the state exchequer more than Rs 4400 crore a year.

The Congress today promised interest-free loans to farmers, free laptops to pre-university students and rice at Re one per kg to Below Poverty Line (BPL) card holders if it came to power in Karnataka, where Assembly elections will take place on May 5.

Srinath Soren is a legislator from Odisha's ruling party, the Biju Janata Dal. He drives an SUV, owns property and gold and even has life insurance. Mr Soren also has a BPL card in his name which declares him a very poor man entitled to subsidised rations.

In good news for BPL cardholders and other marginalised sections, the Delhi government today decided to increase the number of subsidised LPG cylinder for them from nine to 12.
