Countries ranging from the United States and Britain to France and Japan have suffered record losses of poultry in outbreaks of avian flu in the past year.

Health officials in Britain said Thursday they had identified a rare case of avian flu in a person, as the country battles its largest-ever outbreak of the virus among birds.

On Monday, The Hong Kong food safety authority said it has banned the import of poultry meat and products (including poultry eggs) from Japan and Britain over bird flu outbreaks.

Britain on Friday announced the discovery of a highly contagious strain of bird flu at a turkey farm, and sought to allay fears the outbreak could affect the traditional Christmas meal.

Britain on Sunday reported an outbreak of bird flu at a duck breeding farm in northern England but said that the risk to public health was "very low".
