British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell -- accused of grooming underage girls for sex with Jeffrey Epstein -- has been held at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center for almost 17 months, after being arrested last year at her estate in New Hampshire.

The US Department of Justice late on Wednesday ordered an investigation into a Brooklyn jail where inmates said they spent days in frigid, dark cells after a fire cut power and heat during a cold snap in New York City, media reports said.

Inmates at a federal jail in Brooklyn have suffered for days without heat or power during a wintry cold snap, according to lawyers and US lawmakers who rallied outside the jail on Saturday demanding the problems be fixed and ill inmates moved.

New York authorities on Tuesday agreed to pay $6.25 million compensation to an innocent man who spent nearly 25 years languishing in prison for a murder he did not commit.

A 50-year-old Pakistani-Canadian has been sentenced to 14 years in jail for providing material support to the Sikh militant group Khalistan Commando Force, blamed for carrying out assassinations and bombings in India.
