Either perform or "perish" - was Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw's terse message during his first meeting with the employees of public sector telecom operator BSNL.

BSNL has ordered compulsory retirement for its employee and activist Rehana Fathima, who had attempted to enter the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala, for her "intentional" act of outraging the religious feelings of devotees through social media posts.

The Communications Minister told the Lok Sabha that the merger of BSNL and MTNL will have pan-India foot print, synergy in operations, reduction of fixed costs and overheads, among others.

Communications minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said a total of 79,000 employees of BSNL and 14,000 out of 20,000 employees of MTNL have applied for the VRS scheme which the government has come out with to reduce the employee cost in these PSUs which is currently very high as compared to the industry.

The Centre today informed the Lok Sabha that it was serious about the health of the state-owned telecommunication company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and is set to "revive" it and make it "profitable"

Within days of government approving a relief package for the ailing corporation, state-owned BSNL has rolled out a voluntary retirement scheme for its employees, and said it expects 70,000-80,000 personnel to opt for it leading to savings of about Rs 7,000 crore in the wage bill.

BSNL Chairman and Managing Director P K Purwar said that the scheme will be open till December 3.

BSNL has launched 4G services in some parts of the country using 3G spectrum that was allocated to it.

With its employee unions threatening a day-long hunger strike on Friday over delayed salaries during the festival season, state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has said that it is hopeful of paying salaries to its 1.76 lakh employees for September before Diwali.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is eyeing increased earnings from renting out its premises at various locations - the target for rental income has been set at about Rs 1,000 crore this year.

In February this year, BSNL had defaulted on salaries, paying them on March 15 due to tightening revenue conditions.

Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the total employee cost of MTNL and BSNL far outweighed the total employee cost for private telcos. As of May-end, BSNL had 1.63 lakh employees and MTNL had 21,679 employees.

BSNL has 1.76 lakh employees, which have been mostly from the DoT employees at the time of creation of BSNL and its wage cost is 55-60% of the revenue

BSNL employees union would go on an indefinite strike from December 3 over non-issuance of the third pay revision.

BSNL-Patanjali has corporate offers for Patanjali employees, and offer 2GB data per day at starting recharge of Rs. 144.
