Only Bharat Stage VI (or BS-VI) vehicles shall be sold across the country from April 1, 2020, the Supreme Court said today. No BS-IV or BS-VI non-compliant vehicles can be sold after this deadline. The Bharat stage emission standards (BSES) are instituted by the government to regulate output of air pollutants from motor vehicles.

The Oil Ministry has said that Delhi would get BS-6 fuel in 2018, two years ahead of the national deadline to leapfrog from BS-4 to BS-6. The Petroleum ministry today said to counter the spiralling pollution in Delhi, it will launch it will introduce an advanced, cleaner fuel next year, which was scheduled to arrive in 2020. The BS-6 auto fuel, which is two stages ahead of the currently available BS-IV fuel, will be available in Delhi from April 1.
