Joining the debate over the powers of Reserve Bank of India Governor in setting policy rate, C Rangarajan, former head of the central bank, has said the government can do away with the veto power of Governor but a majority of members in the Monetary Policy Committee should be from the RBI.

Stating that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has adopted a cautious approach in keeping rates unchanged on Tuesday, former governor C Rangarajan on Tuesday said the central bank may cut rate by 0.25 basis points by next month if monsoon turns out to be good.

Dr Rajan is confident the RBI's move would prompt banks to cut lending rates.

A search panel, headed by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan, has zeroed in on a successor to Deputy Governor K C Chakrabarty and Punjab National Bank chairman K R Kamath is believed to be top in the reckoning, according to an official privy to the development.

The four-hour long meeting of the high-level advisory committee (HLAC) was attended by other members---Usha Thorat, former RBI Deputy Governor, C B Bhave former SebiI chief, and Nachiket M Mor, Director of the Central Board of Directors of RBI.

The name of K C Land & Finance Ltd, whose application was received but was inadvertently not included in the list of applicants for new bank licences in the private sector, has been added.

A CBI court dismissed the bail plea of C Rajan, Additional Director General in Directorate of Revenue Intellegence, who was arrested on charges of accepting bribe to defreeze a bank account, agreeing with the contention that he was an influential person.

CBI arrested a senior Directorate of Revenue Intelligence official for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs two lakh and an ipad.

The CBI has arrested Additional Director General of Revenue Intelligence, C Rajan, in Chennai.

Speaking to NDTV's Prashant Nair at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Rajan said that India needs to resolve many issues like power shortage, land acquisition and education in order to get back growth.
