Caste Census 2021

The central government has not enumerated caste-wise population other than Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) since independence, Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

"The Government of India has not enumerated caste-wise population other than Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Census since independence," Minister of State Nityanand Rai stated in a written reply.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said that hopefully there will be a consensus among all the political parties in the state on caste census and steps to conduct it will be figured out.

The Congress asked the government on Wednesday why was it "quiet" and "running away" from a caste-based census, which was mooted by a woman MP of the ruling BJP in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday and even by the chief ministers of Bihar and Odisha.

The Census 2021 exercise, when carried out, will enumerate only those SCs and STs that were notified through the constitutional orders of 1950, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday.

Census 2021 won't involve caste-wise data on population, except for Dalits and Scheduled Tribes. The decision has been taken as a matter of policy, the Ministry of Home Affairs informed the Lok Sabha today.

The Bihar Assembly on Monday passed a resolution recommending to the Centre to conduct caste-based census in 2021, when the next head counting exercise would be held in the country.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Wednesday said that Narendra Modi government has taken a decision to conduct caste-wise census in 2021, after the last one under British rule in 1931.

The decision to collect data on Other Backward Castes (OBCs) in the 2021 Census seems to be a "mischievous step" of the government to further divide the population, Opposition leader Sharad Yadav said on Saturday.
