Protests erupted in various parts of Cauvery river basin districts of Karnataka after Supreme Court refused to interfere with orders of Cauvery Water Management Authority's directing the state to release 5,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu.

The Karnataka government said it was not in a position to release Cauvery river water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu even as the Supreme Court on Thursday sought to know the quantum of water that can be spared.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today termed Tamil Nadu's objection to the proposed Mekedatu dam project across Cauvery river as politically motivated, and said the state government will go ahead with the project.
