On February 16, the Supreme Court had given the Centre six weeks to form the board, which was to take control of the dams across river Cauvery and distribute the waters to Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry according to the formula of the Cauvery tribunal. The deadline ends today.

A citizens' group led by philanthropist Kiran Mazumdar Shaw today moved the Supreme Court seeking intervention in the ongoing legal battle between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over distribution of Cauvery water and protection of drinking water rights of residents of Bengaluru and surrounding districts.

Maintaining that Karnataka was not in a position to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today said his government will explain the ground realities to the Supreme Court, which has been approached by the neighbouring state over the issue.

The Congress' state unit today slammed the party-led government in Karnataka for its insistence on constructing a checkdam across river Cauvery at Mekedatu, saying it was against the final award given by a tribunal on the inter-state issue.
