The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has flagged a fake letter written by a fictitious senior officer alleging political interference in the probe into the rape and murder case of a junior doctor in a Kolkata medical college and hospital.

The CBI has taken over investigation in the ITBP recruitment scam in which 24 unsuccessful candidates from across the country were cheated with fake appointment letters to join the force, officials said.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police of the CBI has accused a Joint Director-ranked officer of being involved in a fake encounter, a charge refuted by the agency on Friday saying "no such evidence has surfaced in the probe".

An officer in the CBI has written to the Prime Minister's Office, accusing a top officer of being involved in a "fake encounter of 14 innocent persons". The allegations come a year after the country's top investigating agency saw a bitter, public fight between its then top two officers.

The Supreme Court has expressed its displeasure that the Ministry of Defence has "not even bothered" to respond to the letters addressed to it by the CBI's Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is probing the alleged extra-judicial killings and fake encounters by the Army, Assam Rifles and police in Manipur.
