CBI is facing a severe staff crunch with over 20 per cent vacancies in the crucial executive cadre, mostly investigation officers, while nearly 1,300 cases are pending with it, Lok Sabha was informed today.

To fill up nearly 750 vacant posts in the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI), the Centre will soon write to all the state governments and union territories for recommending personnel.

The CBI told the Supreme Court today that it simply doesn't have enough officers to handle the Vyapam recruitment scam, which was handed over to the agency amid national focus on the unusually large number of deaths linked to the case.
