The Supreme Court on Friday asked eight cement manufacturing companies to deposit 10 per cent of the penalty amount imposed on them by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) allegedly for resorting to cartelisation for manipulating the cement prices.

CCI in its order imposed a penalty of Rs 6,715 crore on 11 cement companies, including India Cements Ltd and Cement Manufacturers Association, for cartelisation.

Competition watchdog CCI had in August slapped a penalty of over Rs 6,700 crore on 11 cement firms as well as industry body Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA) for indulging in cartelisation.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has imposed a Rs 6,320 crore ($944 million) fine on 10 cement companies and a trade body for price fixing, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs said a statement.

The Competition Appellate Tribunal today adjourned hearing on the plea of 11 cement companies seeking stay on Rs 6,307 crore penalty imposed by fair trade regulator CCI on the grounds of cartelisation.
