London firefighters are investigating a fire alert at an underground rail station in the heart of the city's financial district which closed a key commuter transport link on Wednesday.

British police on Thursday carried out a controlled explosion close to a central London underground station after a car was abandoned nearby, but later said the vehicle was not suspicious.

An underground blaze in central London Wednesday caused mass evacuations and forced several West End shows to cancel performances as fire fighters tackled the blaze which sent out a pall of thick smoke.
