Normal life was hit across Arunachal Pradesh amid protests against the centre's decision to honour the 2015 decision of the Supreme Court, granting citizenship to some 54,000 Chakma and Hajong refugees in the state.

The central government is in a precarious situation over the issue of granting citizenship to Chakma-Hajong refugees living in Arunachal Pradesh and is looking for a way out. On one hand, it is under fire for its move towards deporting around 40,000 Rohingya Muslim refugees.

Chakma and Hajong refugees who fled to India from Bangladesh more than five decades ago are set to get limited citizenship in the country, but officials say they cannot be given land or tribal rights as that may trigger conflict.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has said the Centre will urge the Supreme Court to modify its order of granting citizenship to Chakma-Hajong refugees so that the rights of the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh are not diluted.

Describing them as a security threat, India has said it wants to deport nearly 40,000 Rohingya Muslims who have fled the violence in Myanmar, but today, Home Minister Rajnath Singh led a large meeting to decide whether to grant citizenship to tens of thousands of Chakma refugees who are Buddhists based mainly in Arunachal Pradesh.

A delegation of Chakma refugees, who had migrated to India five decades ago from Bangladesh, today met Union Minister Jitendra Singh and sought his intervention for granting citizenship to them.
