Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Saturday hit out at the Uttar Pradesh government over law and order, saying a "jungle raj" is prevailing in the state as violence marred the panchayat polls and women faced indecent behaviour.

Amid concerns about voting machines just ahead of the counting of votes in the national election, allegations have surfaced of voting machines being moved out of their strongrooms in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

In a tragedy on the New Year, at least eight persons were killed and several others injured in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli district on Tuesday, the police said.
