Chennai Grinding Halt

Life virtually came to a grinding halt in Chennai as the city woke up to deserted streets with shops, including eateries, remaining shut in the wake of the demise of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Monday's peak-hour traffic rush came to a grinding halt following Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's whistle-stop visit to the city and actor-politician Vijayakanth's bid to greet him with black flags in protest against the Centre's alleged dilly-dallying on the Mullaiperiyar dam issue.
