Chennai Water Recedes

With water receding from most parts of rain-battered Chennai and its suburbs, the focus is now on clearing the various areas of the waste and muck left behind along with rehabilitation of affected people.

Chennai airport re-opened for 24-hour domestic and international flight operations today, five days after it was shut due to excessive water-logging. The city is now slowly returning to normalcy with water receding from most areas, but cleaning up garbage and slush that piled up due to water-logging remains a big challenge.

The rain water level may be receding in the city bringing relief to people but it is leaving a huge trail of mess, prompting the Chennai Municipal Corporation to launch a mass cleanliness drive for all its 200 wards today, for which some of the civic bodies from the neighbouring districts have also lend a helping hand to.

As water recedes and electricity returns to parts of Chennai, the biggest challenge for authorities now is the mammoth task of cleaning up and preventing an outbreak of disease in parts of the Tamil Nadu capital which have been under as much as 18 feet of water for days.

As clouds scattered in parts of Chennai to let the sun shine after days, receding water levels and no fresh rain brought some respite to the flooded Tamil Nadu capital, that also took heart on Thursday in the new Rs 1,000 crore relief package announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In Chennai's suburb Tambaram, the Baskarans have had trouble breathing for almost two weeks. Water mixed with sewage had flooded entered their Bharathi Nagar home when floods struck. The stench had been unbearable.

It hasn't rained in Chennai since yesterday but its Velacherry -- Tambaram highway is flooded. Commuters on this IT corridor - the road gets the name because it has IT offices on both sides - travel through knee-deep waters.
