The first 50-wagon train carrying 2.5 million litres of water to Chennai arrived in the city on Friday but transporting water by the special trains may not be enough toquench the parched city's thirst - it needs at least 525 million litres of water everyday.

The first 50-wagon train carrying water to Chennai arrived at the parched city this afternoon from Jolarpet railway station carrying 2.5 million litres of water. A second train will also carry more water to the city. The Chennai Metro Water has set a target of ferrying 10 million litres a day.

To quench the thirst of a parched and desperate Chennai, facing severe water scarcity, trains will soon be carrying water from Jolarpet in northern Tamil Nadu, some 200 kilometres from the state capital. Chennai is facing a 40 per cent cut in piped water supply as all four reservoirs outside the city have gone dry.
