Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Meeting On Cauvery

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami and ministers from the Cauvery Delta region will meet Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and urge him to release the river water to save the state's paddy crop, it was announced on Tuesday.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today issued a blistering criticism of Karnataka's withholding of Cauvery water, calling it a "a deliberate defiance" of the Supreme Court.

Signalling its inability to spare Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as per the Supreme Court direction, a special session of the Karnataka legislature today adopted an unanimous resolution to use the water only to meet drinking water needs and not to provide it for any other purpose.

BJP has decided to boycott the all-party meeting called by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today to discuss the future course of action following Supreme Court's order directing Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu till September 27.

Farmers and activists from pro-Kannada outfits protested in various parts of Karnataka on Monday against Supreme Court's directive to the state government to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu while Chief Minister Siddaramaiah convened a meeting of legislature leaders and MPs in Bengaluru to discuss the issue.

Karnataka on Saturday maintained that it was not possible for it to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu given the "severe distress" faced by it as an all-party meeting decided that the Supreme Court be apprised of the "ground reality".
