In what can be a model for police force across the country to spread awareness on child rights, safety and security among police rank and file, the Assam Police today took a unique initiative.

A doctor and his family's domestic help were arrested in Guwahati on Saturday for allegedly physically abusing his adopted daughter, police said.

Claiming that law was being "abused" in Assam on the pretext of the crackdown on child marriage, the TMC on Monday sought the intervention of the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.

Men who marry girls below 14 years will face cases against the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The decision was taken during a state cabinet meeting on Monday.
