The Women and Child Development Ministry's emergency helpline Childline 1098 prevented 898 child marriages during the lockdown imposed in view of the coronavirus outbreak, Union minister Smriti Irani said today.

The Childline India helpline received more than 92,000 SOS calls asking for protection from abuse and violence in 11 days, a sombre indication that the lockdown has turned into extended captivity not just for many women but also for children trapped with their abusers at home.

Three minor girls were reportedly found at the Chennai home of Telugu-Tamil actress Bhanupriya. Childline officials went to her home in T. Nagar after the mother of a girl filed a police complaint in Samalkot, Andhra Pradesh saying her daughter was being held by the actress at her home as a domestic help and not being paid for the job.

At least five marriages of underage brides and grooms were stopped on Tuesday. A mass marriage ceremony of 14 couples was about to take place, when a police team swooped in at a gurudwara, in Jagathgirigutta near Cyberabad, and asked for the age certificates of the couples.

Three children from Bihar, who were brought to Allahabad on the pretext of jobs and rescued from the railway station, were kept in a shelter home "with their limbs tied". The children, aged between 8 and 10, were promised jobs in Allahabad by a man in their village in Bihar's Begusarai district.

At least 107 children were rescued from four cities of Kota division within five days of Operation Milap -- a special drive by Anti-Human Trafficking Cell of the Rajasthan police. The month-long drive, which kicked off on May 15, aims at rescuing missing children, child labourers and minors engaged in begging.
