As Bihar awaits the detailed report on what exactly caused the outbreak of encephalitis that caused the death of over 150 children, a team of doctors who treated the children indicated that asbestos homes in which the children lived could be a factor.

With the number of deaths in Bihar crossing 160 this month due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome and Japanese Encephalitis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called it unfortunate and a "matter of shame for the nation."

One of the poorest states, Bihar has been struggling with an outbreak of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome since the start of June, affecting more than 600 children in more than a dozen districts. The situation was worsened by a heat wave that saw temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) in recent weeks.

In Bihar, 67 children died of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in the last two weeks. AES outbreaks are routine in areas in and around Muzaffarpur during summer, and mostly affects children below 15 years of age.

Over 500 AES deaths reported this year have been owed to AES or Japanese Encephalitis (JE). Scores of children who died in Gorakhpur are believed to be victims of JE.

Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be requested to test samples from children affected by Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), which has led to the death of 130 of them in Bihar, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Saturday.
