China Balloon Over Taiwan

A record eight Chinese balloons have been detected around Taiwan, with two directly flying over the island, Taipei's defence ministry said Saturday.

Taiwan's defence ministry said on Friday it detected five Chinese balloons flying over the Taiwan Strait over the past 24 hours, one of which crossed the island, the latest in a spate of such balloons the ministry says it has spotted.

As an election in democratic Taiwan looms, Chinese balloons have appeared around the island at various times of day in what its military says is a new form of "grey zone" harassment.

Taiwan's defence ministry said on Friday that a Chinese weather balloon had crossed the Taiwan Strait median line on Thursday, about a month before Taiwan's presidential election.

Taiwan has not spotted any surveillance balloons from China in its vicinity, the island's defence ministry said on Tuesday, as a dispute between China and the United States over spy balloons triggers worries about rising military tensions.
