China will simplify visa applications for tourists from the United States from January 1, cutting the documents required, according to a notice on Friday on the website of the Chinese embassy in Washington.

Hundreds of Chinese tourists have been caught using fake military documents to obtain free tickets to historical sites and museums during the ongoing week-long holidays to celebrate China's National Day.

China will keep records of "uncivilised" behaviour by its tourists for up to two years, the country's tourism agency said on Tuesday, to combat a spate of incidents abroad in recent years which it said reflected badly on the country's image.
