China Meat Supplier Scandal

Chinese authorities have charged 10 people over "selling inferior products" in the wake of a food scandal that erupted last year at a unit of US food supplier OSI Group, which saw expired meat sold to global fast food chains.

An undercover local Chinese TV report on July 20 showed workers at Shanghai Husi Food Co Ltd using expired meat and doctoring food production dates. Regulators immediately closed the factory, which is part of OSI Group LLC, a US food supplier and important McDonald's partner.

McDonald's said on Monday that a recent scandal over expired meat from a Chinese food supplier has had a "significant negative impact" on sales in China, Japan and some other markets.

McDonald's and KFC's parent Yum, along with a number of other global brands, have been pulled into a food safety scandal in China after it emerged that Shanghai Husi Food, a unit of US-based OSI Group LLC, had supplied expired meat to clients.

The companies said they immediately stopped using meat from the supplier, Husi Food Co., Ltd. The Shanghai office of China's food and drug agency said it was investigating and told customers to suspend use of its products.
