Early investigations into the Puttingal temple fire show use of chemicals in the fireworks which are traditionally not used by Indian fireworks manufacturers. Sources in the government said that the first test reports indicate the presence of chemicals manufactured in China and used by the fireworks industry there.

The Centre today informed the Madras High Court bench that it had taken all the steps to prevent import of Chinese crackers and had issued strict instructions to Customs officials in Ports and entry points not to allow its arrival.

Madras High Court Orders Notice to Officials on Issue of Chinese Crackers

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court yesterday ordered issue of notice to Secretaries of Home, Industries and Commerce and Director of Explosives seeking their reply within four weeks on a petition praying for a direction to the Centre to impose conditions such as explosives license holders shall not sell Chinese fireworks.
